Advanced tools run on old principles
As an International tool developer and tool provider, UNIMERCO has developed a package of patented cutting tools for the automotive industry in cooperation with European car manufacturer Audi. The collaboration started, when Audi faced problems with chips from the boring process in cylinder heads. The chips got stuck inside the block, and it was a costly and labor intensive process to remove them manually.
Audi and UNIMERCO developed the patented Chip Flow tools to eliminate the problem by combining technical knowledge and skills, and also using the principles of 18th century mathematician, Bernoulli.
Improved chip flow and extended tool life by more than 30 times
By using high pressure in the boring process, a vacuum is created in the channels of the tool. Audi and UNIMERCO used the vacuum to “suck” the chips away from the cutting tools. This improved not only surface quality, but it also dramatically reduced tool wear. Compared with the previously used tools, tool life was increased more than tenfold.
In some cases, tools that drilled 60,000 holes were replaced with UNIMERCO PCD tools and now run more than one million holes.
